The distinction, awarded by the European Sleep Research Society (ESRS), recognizes researchers whose career and scientific contribution have enabled significant advances in sleep knowledge. The award is given every two years as part of the Sleep Europe congress. A neurologist, neurophysiologist, sleep medicine specialist and one of the main Portuguese references in this field, Professor Teresa Paiva has dedicated much of her career to the study, research and dissemination of the importance of sleep for health and quality of life. She was responsible for creating Portugal's first Sleep Laboratory and also played a pioneering role in teaching and developing Sleep Sciences in our country. It was precisely this scientific experience that gave rise to the concept of Sleep & Nature Hotel & SPA. In 2015, Teresa Paiva began developing the project, which opened its doors in 2022, with the aim of bringing scientific knowledge about sleep closer to a hotel experience dedicated to restorative rest, well-being and connection with nature, the latter being one of the clearest pieces of evidence related to deceleration and rest. The awarding of the European Sleep Science Award 2026 thus represents not only the recognition of a career dedicated to Sleep Science, but the substantiation of Sleep & Nature's purpose, whose concept was born under her guidance and remains deeply linked to the scientific knowledge that underpins the importance of sleeping better. Designed and built under the motto of this greater purpose, of restorative sleep and deep rest, Sleep & Nature continues on its path, counting sheep.
